Hello mute, you play stepmania?

Consistently updating older packs? I could understand if the pack was just released and there was something seriously wrong with it, or it was a beta, but eh. Not telling you to do otherwise, but from what I see from pack releases, once it is out there, that is the final product. This leads to people constantly having outdated versions, and results in inconsistent scoring (or perhaps the inability to play the files on online servers, depending on the changes).

Anyway, this is a giant archive, and my (probably unreachable) goal is to have every single pack ever created readily available indefinitely in one place. I'll tell you what though, if you update a pack and make me aware of it (like by posting in this thread or something) I'll update the pack immediately. Considering that you would have to post around in various places again, in order for people to even know you updated the pack, that probably isn't much of a hassle. I can also treat all hosted packs as out of date and do a mass re-upload now, to ensure no one here downloads an older version.

Does that sound alright?

EDIT: Updated

Don't release a pack if it's not 100% done. Editing released packs is seriously stupid. Now I know not to waste my time on your shit.

While I will say that Blind's remark was harsh, I will explain how pack releases work at the communities I have been around (which have been mostly keyboard oriented). A pack release is the absolute final step in pack production, and unless some sort of serious error is found within the first day or two (like a song being glitched somehow), it isn't ever really touched again. Imagine releasing a pack in the same sense as say, publishing a book, where a few months from now they aren't going to just suddenly add a chapter, or remove a paragraph or two. To put it in the most simple terms, if you are not satisfied with your pack, you shouldn't release the pack as a completed work. A StepMania pack is usually created by the combined efforts of the community at the time, or at the very least picked apart and analyzed by them. Before releasing a pack, you should have it be play tested or release it as a beta, so you can be ensured all gripes are dealt with before you put it out there forever.

The reason why I feel updating a released pack is a bit odd is because you have to know that there is no way everyone is going to download the pack updates. This will cause (as I mentioned in my prior post) scoring inconsistencies, annoyance for players, and potentially break online capability for your pack if versions are different. If the times have changed (in terms of what is deemed decent step material), it's probably just better to move on, or re-step files and add them into a new re-stepped pack. At least then people who follow you well enough to know your new pack releases will get your re-steps, and those who might only have one or two of your packs won't be given the burden of dealing with obsolete material. A pack being constantly updated is one still in beta to me, but in reality you released it, so I am obligated to archive it.

Wouldn't be such a big deal if packs weren't the main (and sometimes only) method players use to get songs for StepMania, but that is the case. If packs are good, they spread around after they are released (because of horrible file sharing sites / fear of expiration / fear of take down / blah blah). This means all updates to the same pack do is confuse matters more when it comes down to it.

As far as expansion packs go, I don't really understand why they wouldn't just make another pack in continuation with the series, instead of adding on to the original. Although expansion packs might be technically considered mini packs of their own though (not altering the original songs within the packs anyway) so it doesn't seem to be as bad.

I don't know, clashing values and communities ugh...

I guess the main thing I'd like to emphasize is the whole is the whole part about what people liked on pad only a few years ago is drastically different than what people like today. People generally stay away from old files as they are stepped "horribly" by today's standards. I can assure you that all these packs were tested a very large amount before their release and were thought to be fine back then, but as what people enjoy changes, they became less fun. Therefore they have been changed to meet the current communities "standards". Again, mute is definitely not the only person to do this. If it really bothers you why not upload both and have one labeled *revision*

I really shouldn't delve into separating updates to released packs as revisions. If it is as common of an occurrence as you say it is, there is absolutely no way I would be able to keep up. Additionally, I would somehow have to find previous versions to released packs (which considering they have become obsolete and probably fell off the face of the internet, or if not, have no immediate indication to determine if they are a particular revision) that would be an impossible task. Also it would clutter the already gargantuan downloads page with the same pack having only a few changes.

I'll gladly update packs if I am told about their revision, but the pack creator(s) should be aware of the potential confusion and inconsistencies that will arise for players, if they decide to obsolete a release. If the risks of annoying or confusing players (who are outside the epicenter of your respective communities) seems like an acceptable trade off, then I suppose it doesn't matter. If you want to re-step a few of your older files, and throw them in with current projects to release it as a new pack, that would streamline things a lot more. Not just for end users, but for archives as well.

You're welcome, and I'm glad things are settled. Updating packs takes extremely little time, can pretty much guarantee same day updates from when I am informed about them (if not even sooner).

As for Mute Sims 8, got it uploaded and listed under pad.

Three new simfiles added to Mute Sims X:

SX13. My submission to @@'s stamina comp. 10-minutes of trancey goodness with lots of 136 bpm stream.

SX11 / SH8. Cute remix with lots of purple notes.

SX11 / SH10. D'n'B banger with some easy footswitches and simple scroll speed gimmicks*.

Huge update:

• Mute Sims X is now released.
• Mute Sims 7 has received a large facelift for graphics and charts.
• Mute Sims 1 now has full lower difficulties for singles charts.
• Touched up graphics and charts in a few other packs.
• Mute Rejects 1 has been finalized.
• Mute Rejects 2 is now released.

If the site's pack index could be updated with the versions posted here, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Hey! Joined this site just to let you know that I love your files! But just one thing, I tried to download your 2nd pack and it says the file is no longer available. Is there anyway I can get that pack?

First post updated with the link to my simfile blog where all my material is hosted.

If anyone reading this is capable of doing so, I would really appreciate it if all of my packs were removed from this site's database. I do not want my material hosted here. Thanks~
