Can't change speed?

I'm new and just downloaded stepmania 5. I've gone online and when starting a song i change whatever needs changing but there's no other options other that 1x speed and c and m numbers which i don't know about.

I've beening looking around and all i'm getting is a bunch of code etc. in other words clueless!
So is there an idiots guide to changing the speed?

stepmania 5 beta 4 is the one i've downloaded and i'm using windows 7

I assume you mean the speed of the notes. You should be seeing this in the options where you can change the speed:

If you navigate to either "+1", "+0.25", "-1" or "-0.25" and press enter, you can increment and decrement your speed with those amounts. The value that shows as the first item in the row (in this case "1x") is your current speed setting.

You've helped, I've been playing a really old stepmania for years and just though I'd look up stepmania again and saw this site and stepmainia 5. I'm used to seeing x1, x2, x3, x4 etc.

No problem glad to hear it's sorted!
The way the speed settings work now is actually a very recent (but imo convenient) change. Now you can pick whatever speed you want, not stuck with set values :)
