Stepmania not responding

If I connect to SMO and then play normal mode, the game freezes and says "not responding" however if I'm not connected I don't get this problem.
Any ideas as to what's causing it?

jim what i didnt know you played stepmania
if you're using that theme everyone is using nowadays then select network instead of normal, otherwise it thinks you're playing singleplayer and everything dies
