I used to play from about 2004-07 and I guess I completely forgot how much endurance you have to build up in your fingers. This is a painful process!

I get that feeling a lot. Not that it hurts, but I get the feeling I am way beyond my prime. After 10+ years of this my fingers aren't what they used to be.

I can keep up with most of the older packs, but some of those new song packs are just ridiculous.

I've been watching a few SM videos from some guy on YouTube named Staiain; is he the knew Thaor or something? Seems he dominates incredibly hard files and generally is using speed modifiers. Or, is that the new general level of top SM players these days?

No. Stai is a monster when it comes to stepmania. In comparison, yes, he's the new ThoaR. Him and two others are up there. Isaac and Old Cartoon. There's others that are getting close to that as well.
