I think a new version of OpenSMO with MySQL should be released for all operating systems. Why? Because MySQL works better than SQLite. Also, there are lots of bug fixes and performance and stability improvements. The only question is, why hasn't there been a new release in a long while?

Why, are you planning to create your own SMO server?
We changed over from a while back, and our server stability is pretty solid at the moment. This isn't some temp derp server some random made that flickers in and out of existence or crashes down every two seconds. This is a huge project that is improving everyday, and is certainly not going anywhere anytime soon.

The change to MySQL was done by smo.net. We are running our own fork of OpenSMO with all of our personal changes that make it better and more stable.
But yea, OpenSMO is an project that we are committing changes to.

The past 30 or so revisions are have not even been committed to github. The current 'master' branch of SMO is very broken right now and is not ready for a release. Again, we are more committed to keeping smo.net running then keeping the opensmo project up to date.
