Old Stepmania>New

Hey all, I've been playing stepmania for years with a keyboard and using a version of the 'spread' as I've read somewhere(left hand index finger for left arrow and right hand index, middle and ring finger for the down, up and right arrows)
I've noticed that there's packs geared towards keyboard players so I need to change my style but i'll manage for now as the problem I'm having is that I've recently downloaded some new packs namely the ddr x and x2, speedcore 2 and the freaks favourites packs.

Ok, so I've played six songs on the ddrx and x2 pack and get the extra stage etc finish and when I put in my name, as I've made a score, the game crashes. so I've played the game again without playing the new packs and no problem. I played again and just played one song from the new pack and the rest i played what i have and no crashes. I'm thinking it's something with the scoring or the points total making the game crash... not sure as i'm dumb with these kinds of things.

StepMania 3.9 alpha 12 is the version I'm using, and I quite like it as I'm used to it and been using it for years, but i think this problem using these new packs will go away if i update my stepmania. I've looked at the latest stepmania 5 and I just couldn't get used to it. I mean the notes are too close and it didn't sit nicely on the screen compared to what i know. So is there a way to make stepmania 5 look like what i'm playing now? Or can my crashing problem be something small which can be sorted easily. I don't mind mentioning what I've got in my StepMania 3.9 alpha 12 folders or screen shots etc.
Any help would be appreciated!

While SM 3.9 is considered to be more stable, SM5 is way more up-to-date. I recommend looking for a different SM5 theme or something. Try this site.

http://sm.ajworld.net/themes/

It even lists what version you need to use the theme correctly. If you wish to stick with 3.9, I cannot help you sorry. (It's outdated to me.)

Also, if it says you need a nightly build, you can get one here. http://smnightly.katzepower.com/

Edit: Stepmania 5 871 2015-01-23_11-18-10 (use this one. 872 was messed up last time I tried it.)

Thanks again for your help, not sure of this term 'nightly', but i'll have a look and see whats it all about. I've already started making stepmania 5 more to what i'm used to from my old stepmania, it's a nostalgia thing from my teen years and a couple friends challenging for high scores etc. So just moving folders around to keep the good and working stuff from my old stepmania into the new.

Thanks again!
