Most Common Packs

Postby Izzy » Mon Oct 22, 2012 1:19 pm

I'm most likely going to add an additional page to the main site for downloads. What I need to know is what are the absolute most common packs that are played?

If we could limit it to about 10-20 that would be good. The point of this is so that new players have a convenient place to get started with collecting files in order to reduce lackers.

Keyboard:
- Keyboard Megapack
- Keyboard Collaboration
- FFR community packs
- Fresh Flock of Fantastic Files F4 and Fabulously Fresh Flock of Fantastic Files F5
- Nuclear Blast JS Awesome Bomb Filez
- Otaku's Dream
- Puritanical Penis Packs
- Rebound Dump Collection Megapacks
- Video Game Megapack
- Xoon pack

Pad:
- Dance Dance Revolution
- In The Groove
- FoonMix
- Otaku's Dream Pad Packs

I've listed the most common keyboard packs I typically see on SMO in my simfile packs thread, but unfortunately they add up to far more than 10-20 packs in total. The thing is, a lot of the more popular packs seem to be a part of a group of packs (like the Hard Songs Megapacks are 11 packs, or how the Nuclear Blast JS Awesome Bomb Filez are 4 packs so far). So when linking 10 or 15 of the most common packs, you really end up linking well over 40 or 50 sometimes (especially if you include stuff like the SS styles or Otaku's dream anime/video game/etc mixes).

If you want to play on SMO without lacking all that much, unfortunately the bottom line is you are going to need to download a boatload of packs.

Although I'm not sure how this stands for pad players. I would like to see some sort of list of common packs for them, considering I have no idea what would be commonplace for that to help out newer players.

There's no way 10-15 will do it. Like foxfire said, some groups alone are 12 right now. (HSMP) We need a list of like 40 at least. Also, I don't think the older songs should be in there, though encouraged to get. It's all easy charts that no one wants to play anymore. (usually)

I'd get there to be an announcement on the chat thing with a link to a thread with a list of all major song packs.

With all the different play styles, it'll be hard to accommodate for everyone with just those listed.

I decided to just upload everything. Soon there will be a list of every pack I can get my hands on which will be hosted by houkounchi.

Hasn't caused any issues in the past decade. If someone asks us to remove something I suppose we will.

Mmm you could include the Vocaloid Collaboration packs. There's a fair amount of Vocamania peeps on the server and it will rise. Although it uses UTF-8 Unicode stuffs so it may not record properly :(

Alright, thank you for your input. I'll find those and add them and fix the issues you pointed out.

Edit: The reason I didn't upload keyboard megapack 1 was that it is already included in 1.5.

Also the whole otaku's dream mix things are really confusing. I'm not really sure which ones I have and which ones I don't and which are keyoard or pad anymore.

Oh 1 is included in 1.5, I didn't know that whoops!

Just double check things at . A lot of the packs are pad and keyboard combined, or have difficulties designed for both styles in the files. I'm pretty sure they are hybrid packs unless otherwise specified. Although Otaku's Dream mix 1 and 2 I believe have separate downloads for the pad and keyboard files.

Actually Keyboard megapack 1 has 24 songs that aren't in 1.5.

And essentially, you could mirror almost all the packs in icy's thread on ffr. I've been slowly dl'ing them all, so maybe someone else will do the same? Also, the links there go dead quite often. I've been running into that a lot lately.

Edit: I might of taken that the wrong way. Either way, the more you know! ;D

Can we have the downloads in order of Pad/Keyboard THEN alphabetical. That would makes things a lot easier.

I don't really want "everything" to be uploaded. I'd prefer to keep it to higher quality and more popular files. I'd like to avoid duplicates as well.

Feel free to talk to houkounchi about some kind of server access though.

The only thing about that is, a lot of keyboard players find dump files to be rather enjoyable. I can understand keeping genuinely lackluster packs away from the downloads section, but with some of the most common packs I am seeing keyboard people play being HSMP's, NBJS's, Rebound dump collection megapacks, and even midare, there might need to be a few exceptions to this. Unfortunately duplicates are pretty much inevitable, considering that people seemed to submit their files to multiple packs back in the day. I am not seeing this much at all in more recent pack releases (re-steps perhaps, but not duplicates) but it would be very difficult to upload packs and not have a few of them at the very least. Although there are a few packs I can think of off the top of my head that would be pointless to upload due to duplicates if you want me to list them.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind. That was the only thing I was really wondering about server wise, but if it's under control then I won't worry about it for now. That is, unless you want to narrow down acceptable packs to upload with me that haven't been already. Don't want to go crazy uploading and indexing if some of the packs seem to be unnecessary or particularly terrible.
