so with the default theme, there is a big 'expert 13' (or whatever the song is) sign at the bottom where the notes come up from... plus the place where you actually hit the notes seems lower (probably because of the extra bar there).

Either way, this makes the area where you can actually see the notes much smaller, and I play at C720. And yeah, lowering that is an option, but I'd much rather move the 'expert 13' sign, or raise the place where the notes are hit.

I know I can also get another theme, but if I don't have to I'd rather not. If this is the only way, can anyone recommend some?

You can just comment out the StepsDisplayP1OnCommand line in your metrics.ini in the [ScreenGameplay] section.
