Would it be possible to label players based on whether or not they pay KB or PAD. I would hate to assume that people would lie about this, so maybe a simple toggle is user preferences is all it would take.
On a side note, how cow i never realized people actually took playing SM with a keyboard seriously. Boy was I wrong.

Re: Separate KB from PAD
With the new commands /scan and /commonpacks in place, it really becomes trivial whether someone plays keyboard or pad. The only thing that really matters is that those playing have similar packs to play, which can now be found out extremely easily. If you are looking for people to specifically play pad with, you could just simply create or join a room that specifically states it is for pad players.
Pertaining to your side note, you were probably just either part of a community that only revolved around playing pad files, or were not part of any community at all. People like to assume on their own that StepMania is essentially Dance Dance Revolution, and don't realize that there are a variety of styles and game types to play (ie, singles pad / keyboard, pump, solo, doubles / couples etc). The main things you will see around here though are singles keyboard / pad, and the occasional solo player. As I'm sure you can see if you checked out the downloads page, both singles pad and keyboard styles have fared very well, and have had quite a community backing over the years.
