What do you call this keymap?

Postby DJChupa13 » Tue Jul 23, 2013 3:08 pm

I've played StepMania for years (and I'm just now getting back to it) and I've never heard of another player using the keymap I use:

Left hand: wasd
Right hand: ijkl

I've played on that map for so long that I can't even play on the arrows anymore, or any variation of "spread." I've always called this map "cross spread." Just trying not to be a loner here X_X

The ring fingers to a lot of work, but I'm so used to it now. Should I be switching to something else?

Double setup is what it is called. People generally don't use it because it is considered cheating to have 2 sets of keys for each note. In the end it doesn't really make any difference though.

Double set up is cheating because it can turn jacks into trills, and trills into stream, and jacks are generally pretty difficult, so its more or less cheating if you compare your scores with that setup to a spread player.

That's how I used to play index, just for crossovers and I was always on a laptop with lil keys which made a single pad impossible.

Whoah! Don't get the wrong idea, if you have fun with double set up you can keep playing that way and its still equally impressive in its own way, you'll just have a hard time finding anyone to compare scores to since there's not really a lot of people who use that setup.

Well put. This game doesn't need to be a competition. If you have fun and enjoy how you are playing then there shouldn't be anything stopping you.

Well I think that's kinda what I wanted to start doing -- comparing scores, to see how I really measure up to other players in the community. I've been playing since c. 2004 and I've never wanted to be active in the community until now. I feel like I'm a damn good player but I'm not going to go around and brag when I have a cheap setup =P

All I can say is WOW JACKS ARE HARD lol

Welcome to the SM community. There is a bigger group of SM players on flashflashrevolution.com.
